Next Level U Statement
My name is Mara Edward, I am interested in continuing my hockey journey by playing at a Post Secondary level over the next 4 years. I would greatly appreciate speaking with you about the prospect of joining your Team and attending your school.
As a dedicated and passionate athlete, I am eager to contribute to the success of your program and continue my hockey journey. I was hoping I could speak with you about my future plans for the next four years and how I might be able to contribute to your team.
I have twelve years of competitive hockey experience with the Kingston Ice Wolves Association.
Throughout my time with the Ice Wolves, I have developed a strong foundation in the sport, competing at the Tier 1 level and consistently striving for excellence on the ice.
A significant milestone in my hockey journey was being chosen as the team Captain for the Kingston Ice Wolves Tier 1 Team during the 2023-2024 season. This experience not only reinforced my leadership skills but also instilled in me a deeper sense of responsibility and accountability both on and off ice.
In addition to club hockey, I have played three years of varsity hockey at the Triple AAA level in Ontario. One of the highlights of my varsity hockey career was being chosen for the Coach’s Award for both the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons, a recognition that underscored my dedication, work ethic, and commitment to the team. I was also honored to be selected as an Assistant Captain for the 2023-2024 varsity team.
As a player, I pride myself on my strong skills and discipline in teamwork, leadership, and coachability. I am a versatile and adaptable athlete, capable of thriving in high-pressure situations and rising to the occasion when it matters most.
As a right defenseman, I possess powerful skating skills and excel in both offensive and defensive roles. I am a playmaker who excels at moving the puck out of the defensive zone quickly and with precision, making me an asset on both special team power plays and penalty kills.
Beyond hockey, I have a wide range of interests that keep me active and engaged. Growing up on the St. Lawrence River, I developed a passion for boating and water sports, truly embodying the spirit of a “river rat.” My love for water also extends to recreational swimming. I enjoy running and biking, which complements my athletic pursuits and keeps me in top physical condition. I have been actively training for 3 years with a personal trainer 3-5 times a week to ensure I am following a solid off ice workout to build up my strength and conditioning. In addition to my love for sports, I have a strong passion for family time, travel and music, which helps me to relax and recharge.
I am eager for the opportunity to speak with you personally and demonstrate my on-ice skill set and my strong commitment to teamwork. I am confident that my passion for the game, coupled with my dedication and work ethic, would make me a valuable addition to your team.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I would truly appreciate any possibility to meet with you and your team to discuss your program and how I may contribute to its development and continued success.

Letters of reference from Varsity Coaches
June 2023
“Mara is a dependable defenseman we would trust in any situation. She is extremely smart with the puck even when under pressure from some of the best players in the Kingston area. Mara is a great team player, a leader, and very coachable. She is a smooth skating defenseman who always makes the right first pass. Not only was she the quarterback for the powerplay, but she could also shut the other team down on the penalty kill. Mara will be an integral part of the Holy Cross Girls’ hockey team for years to come.”
June 2024
“Mara is an incredibly talented defenseman. We trusted her in every situation. She was on our power plays, our penalty kills, and always on the ice against the opponents’ top players. Mara was very often double shifted. She would come off the ice and I would say, I need you back out there quickly. Without hesitation, she was back on the ice with a smile on her face. Not only is she someone that we trusted because of her defensive skills, but we also relied on to start our offence. She was always able to make the first pass to get the puck out of our end, starting the offensive rush. She is also extremely capable of carrying the puck herself and creating offensive opportunities for our team. Mara is extremely coachable and a quiet leader in the room, leading by example. She never complained and always had a positive attitude, on and off the ice. She is an incredible hockey player and an amazing young woman. We are so thankful that she has been a part of HC hockey and are looking forward to having her back next year. “

To whom it might concern,
I am writing this character reference letter on behalf of Mara Edwards, who I have known and
coached for over two years now. I am pleased to provide my reference of her character and
abilities as an athlete.
I have witnessed Mara commit an infinite amount of hours of training, consistently pushing
boundaries to achieve a higher level of excellence. This level of commitment is what separates
the great athletes from good ones, and she undoubtedly belongs to the former category. Mara
approaches every practice or game with an unmatched work ethic. Her willingness to put in the
extra effort, even when it is grueling and demanding, is very notable. She understands that
success in athletics is directly proportional to the effort invested, and her hard work serves as an
inspiration to teammates.
Mara is an excellent team player – not only committed to her personal growth but also to the
success of the team. She knows the importance of collaboration, communication, and
sportsmanship on and off the ice. She leads by example through her actions and determination.
Another one of Mara’s great qualities is her coachability. She is always open to feedback and
eager to learn and improve. Her humility, respect and willingness to listen makes her an
amazing athlete to work with and she consistently demonstrates the ability to incorporate
feedback given into her game, resulting in continuous growth and development.
At the end of the last season Mara had to face an injury that could have easily sidelined her all
summer. Through intense physical therapy, a meticulously planned recovery regime, incredible
resiliency and a warrior-like mindset, she defied the odds and recovered in record time.
In conclusion, Mara’s dedication, hard work, commitment, leadership, and coachable nature will
make a positive impact on any team or organization. I have no doubt she will continue to excel
and achieve greatness in her athletic endeavours.
If you have any further questions or require any additional information, please feel free to
contact me at any time.
Sincerely,
Marina Sergina
