2023 Season Off to a great start!

23 May 2023 by Blake Wilson

So far in 2023 I have started off the season strong with a victory at the MJT KenWo GC, Nova Scotia with a personal best final round score of 70 to beat the entire field. I overcame a 5 shot deficit to win. Conditions were cool and I haven’t had too many outside rounds yet this season. I spent a lot of my off season training indoors and that was the biggest factor in my swing being very repeatable and knowing my yardages.  My driver and irons were dialed in, and on the final round I managed to hit 17 greens, making 4 birdies. I continue to work on improving flighting my wedges and having a few more shots in the bag with different trajectories. This win resulted in being invited to the MJT Future Stars event June 23-24 in Edmonton. I am working toward a Top 3 finish in that event with more emphasis on putting over the next few weeks. I am excited for the competition.

See MJT Press Release: Blake Wilson, 15 of Windsor Junction, NS, fired the low round of the tournament to come from behind and win MJT Low Overall and the Juvenile Boys title.  “It feels good knowing that my practice this winter paid off,” said Wilson, who receives a direct exemption into the MJT Future Stars presented by ATB along with his other qualifying spots.  “(The win) helped me improve my strategy at different courses like hitting centre of greens and just knowing what’s my consistent shot.”

The CJGA event in PEI was the second event of the season and I finished second overall. The event was memorable for the less than ideal conditions with winds over 65km/hr and cold rain. The event was shortened to 45 holes due to rain. The final round saw the winds die down and scoring conditions return. I shot an even back 9 and started to feel my swing return. While conditions were tough this weekend it meant more irons off the tee and lower trajectory shots. I hit more punch shots than ever before. Third day of play saw me post the best round for the entire field and fought back from 7th place to 2nd.

Next up is the MJT event at Chester Golf Club. A course I know well and have had success at before.
