The NCAA Division I Cabinet has unanimously approved a major shift in how student-athlete eligibility is determined. Moving away from a complex web of sport-specific rules, the division is adopting a streamlined, age-based eligibility model designed to align athletics more closely with college enrollment and graduation patterns.
Under the new model, Division I student-athletes will be permitted up to five years of eligibility, provided they enroll in college no later than the academic year following their 19th birthday.
By tying eligibility directly to an age, the NCAA is effectively eliminating several long-standing sections of the Division I rulebook. Gone are:
- Sport-specific eligibility timelines
- Season-of-competition limits
- Traditional redshirt rules
- Eligibility extension waivers
The transition to the age-based model will roll out in phases to ensure fairness to current and incoming athletes:
| Student Athletes | Which eligibility rules apply |
| Student-athletes who used their final season of competition (under previous rules) during 2025-26. | No additional eligibility. |
| Current student-athletes with eligibility remaining (under previous rules) after the 2025-26 academic year. | Either the previous rules OR the new age-based model, whichever is most beneficial to the student-athlete. |
| Prospects who initially enroll full time at any college or university during 2026-27. | Either the previous rules OR the new age-based model, whichever is most beneficial to the student-athlete. |
| Prospects who initially enroll full time at any college or university in fall 2027 or later. | The age-based model only. |
Pausing the Clock: Allowed Exceptions
While standard waivers are disappearing, the Cabinet has outlined specific, strict exceptions that can temporarily pause an athlete’s eligibility clock under the age-based system. These include:
- Pregnancy
- Active-duty military service
- Official religious missions
To maintain consistency across the division, these exceptions will be centrally managed by the NCAA Eligibility Center. An athlete cannot participate in organized competition during the period of the exception for it to apply.
Crucial Deadlines for Outstanding Waivers
For current student-athletes seeking waivers or extensions based on hardships or circumstances that occurred during or prior to the 2025–26 academic year, schools must submit all requests and documentation to the national office no later than July 31, 2026. After this hard deadline, waivers under the previous rules will no longer be available.
This could have a significant impact on student-athletes considering prep school, gap years, junior sports, or delayed college enrollment. Make sure you are prepared and understand how this affects you and your process.
